It is rumoured that the hacking collective, Anonymous, is planning to bring down the social network site on November 5, The Telegraph reports.
The hacking group are accusing Facebook of abusing the privacy of its users, even passing on certain data to law enforcement units.
“Operation Facebook” emerged from a YouTube video message from the hactivists, declaring their intent and rallying other participants to join them in the take down.
The video, which asks others to "join the cause and kill Facebook for the sake of your own privacy," has now amassed over a million views in the three weeks it has been viral.
There is speculation over the validity of the video. A spokesperson from Anonymous, an organisation of members with secret identities that lacks a rigid command structure, told the AFP they were unsure what to make of the claims. "This could be as dumb as one person making a video or as big as someone having already broken into the Facebook network," said the Anonymous spokesman.
