It had action, drama, romance and eye candy together with a soundtrack that helped define a decade, so perhaps its not that great a surprise that the 1986 movie ‘Top Gun’ has provided such an inspiration to ad makers.
Seven years after the film was released its soundtrack was used in an advert for the Honda Integra, and then there was that Will Young video for ‘Switch it On’ where the toff decided to turn fighter pilot in the footsteps of Tom Cruise.
Some 23 years later the legacy of ‘Top Gun’ lives on in this latest pop promo for the forthcoming single from Swedish outfit Star Pilots.
Featuring buff blokes playing volleyball and girls in bikinis soaping down fighter jets there’s something for everyone.
Pop justice (think Smash Hits for today) has gone so far to describe it as, “simultaneously the most gay and the most straight thing we've ever seen.” Crikes!
Interesting fact. The band were nominated to represent their home country in this year’s Eurovision Song Contest, but were pipped to the winning post. Good thing? Bad thing? The jury’s still out.
For those interested, this new track is out on May 18. Errr, like anyone’s listening when it’s got a video like this.
