Halloween is upon us and in homage to the horror genre HMV have made a spooky montage of well-loved scary classics for its latest campaign.
Clips from The Blair Witch Project, Psycho, Scream and The Shinning feature in the minute-long ad. As the tension mounts the commercial ends with the strapline “Don’t go out tonight, dead good DVDs from £5.”
The TV spot goes hand in hand with HMV’s annual customer poll, which saw 6,000 horror fans vote supernatural thriller The Exorcist the scariest film ever.
Jonny Scurfield, HMV DVD buyer says the horror film have grown in popularity, "Halloween has become a key retail event, with sales of Horror DVDs more than doubling in the past three years, and this year, with the doom and gloom of the credit crunch, you get the feeling it may prove a bit of a boom for Horror, with more people staying in to watch their favourite movies.
"It's a phenomenon we wanted to assess properly by asking our customers for their top film choices, and it's evident that Horror is now a legitimate film genre, a category that can embrace everything from the psycho terror of 'Saw' The Shining' to the chilling silence of 'Nosferatu'.
The Halloween spot follows the montage of memorable scenes from classic love films and TV shows that featured HMV's biggest ever Valentine’s campaign in February.
