Guinness adverts - 5 of the best

Guinness adverts - 5 of the best

As Guinness are celebrating their 25th anniversary this year, we thought we'd take a look at their advertising over the years and pick out 5 of the best.

From their first ever television advert 'Poster Comes to Life - Sea Lion' which was the first advert to be shown on evening television in 1955 to the iconic 'Surfer' advert from 1998, they have certainly created some of the most iconic advertising of our time.

With such high production and great soundtracks, we really picked five of the best from a fantastic bunch.

1. 'Surfer' (1998)

This ad is possibly the most famous Guinness advert ever made. Passages from Moby Dick feature in the voiceover to add to the mood of the piece. The music is ‘Phat Planet’ by Leftfield from their album Rhythm & Stealth.

2. 'Dancing Man' (1994)

This advert was to reinforce the campaign 'Good Things Come To Those Who Wait'. The 'good thing' in the end is, of course, the Perfect Pint of Draught Guinness. It was one of the most talked about Guinness adverts and had revellers flocking to the floor to emulate the eye-catching dance moves of Irish actor Joe McKinney to the sounds of the Perez Prado Orchestra.

3. 'Penguins - Best Mate' (2007)

This was the fifth television ad in the 'Knowing What Matters' campaign entitled 'Best Mates'. The majority of the commercial was filmed on location in the remote surroundings of Illuslisat, Greenland and Mar del Plata, Argentina. However, cutting edge CGI techniques were used to add the finishing touches. The advert features the 1945 Bing Crosby track "Accentuate The Positive".

4. 'Snail Race' (2000)

This execution was part of the ‘Good Things Come to Those who Wait’ campaign, showing with snails that speed isn’t everything. The advert was shot in Cuba with music from Babarabateri/Beny More (with Perez Prado and his orchestra).

5. 'Poster Comes to Life - Sea Lion' (1955)

This is the first ever Guinness television advert which was broadcast on 22 September 1955. With the launch of ITV, it was the first ever evening any advertising appeared on television in the UK.
