I was reading the other day that the new online social network for Barbie called 'Barbie Girl' might be getting shut down because of the way it is sexing up young girls. Girls are invited to make up fictional characters and participate in chat. This is, however, having adverse effects such as bullying in the forums. It is suggested that it may also have negative impacts on these girls' social skills in the 'real' world.

When should regulations be imposed on social network sites? Girls as young as 6 are using Barbie Girls- is this too young?

Yes there needs to be many more regulations, especially for sites which are targetting young girls. Sites like these can encourage all sorts of problems like bullying and sexulisation of children. I'm all for social networking, but not for 6 year olds!

This is nothing new. Advertisers always have tricks up their sleeves to target kids. With more and more TV restrictions being introduced by CAP and the ASA, digital seems to be the avenue most open to them and one they are keen to exploit. If only they would just let kids be kids.

I agree Billy. Saying that, if we are moving forwards in digital, kids are inevitably going be involved in this.

It's getting more and more difficult to restrict what is on the net but the fact that children are being affected means that we really do need to take note.
