I have been studying advertising and marketing and university and I have been asked to look at companies which look at the consumers needs before their own. The only thing is when I try to think of companies in my head they all seem to come up with a product that we dont necessarily need so they persuade us into buying it. What companies do you think put the consumers needs first?

Perhaps you're not approaching this from the right angle. All companies put consumers needs first if they are serious about making money as a business.

Before any new product is released on the market there's usually extensive market research carried out to identify market demand.

If there's no demand, there's no market and no point in put putting a product into manufacture.

Hope this helps...

I am a student studying the same qualification. In terms of marketing orientated companies I would first look who can actually implement this philosophy. Larger organizations tend to find it hard because of the size and lack of control, particular in service based industries. Smaller companies are very much marketing orientated. The philosophy behind marketing orientation is that companies use the customer as the focus point and the centre of their universe.

Theory into practise is not always as easy as it seems to large organizations need to use large investments and training.

What year are you in?
