I have recently got a new job at a big agency. It's going really well and I love the job but everyone drinks so much. I want to be part of the team and make friends but I dont want to become an alcoholic- especially since January is meant to be detox time! Any tips anyone?

Admittedly it's tricky one. You want to feel part of the gang but if your health and work is suffering is it worth it. Your colleagues might think you're a lot of fun, but when you look like the company clown, you can wave your future career at the agency goodbye.

Firstly, just try not to drink during the week. Find alternative activities to do instead of heading to the pub - visit the cinema, go to the gym, find a new activity group to join. If you're in London there's no shortage of things to do. Did you know some museums and art galleries even have late evening openings.

Secondly, if you must go out, pace yourself and alternate alchoholic with soft drinks.

Thirdly, if you feel you're not in control of things get help. There's no shame in seeking help, but there is shame in waving your job goodbye. There are no shortage of people with addictive personalities working in marketing and with that no shortage of alcoholics.

That said, it's the alcoholics in denial you'll notice. They're the ones still drinking... it's the alcoholics who are doing something about that it aren't... and have possibly slipped right under your radar as they're not in your drinking 'buddy' circle.

And these 'friends' who you are drinking with...They don't sound like friends if they are encouraging to drink so much.

However, at the end of the day, you can't blame them. The buck stops with you...

Good luck
