What are people's thoughts on this matter? I think festivals are becoming more and more branded, even hippy Glasto!

Marketing exists at festivals but it is subtle. It's not like there are hundreds of outdoor ads present, i think it's being maintained pretty well.

Brands are using festivals to create awareness. I don't think their aim is to sell sell sell. They are able to communicate to current and potential customers. When you get large festivals you see more big brands using them. Why do they use them? Well when they are shown on TV it has a wide market coverage and is also able to target the right markets for the viewers. Its a lower cost per viewer than advertising on TV. Also being involved and getting your brand as the main name in the sponsorship, for example if there was a festival in Manchester and Vodaphone sponsored it would not just be the Manchester festival but the Vodaphone manchester festival. High awareness can help brands image and may encourage sales.

They are not subtle with their marketing at all! At Glasto, there was Greenpeace branding everywhere, all beer was Carlsberg with big branded banners and the Orange tent was bright Orange! Bit of an eye sore all round to be honest!
