I've recently got a new job which I love, but my boss always stays working in the office until 9pm and I feel that I cant go home before him. Should I also work late or should I just go home? I don't want to make a bad impression but I also want a social life and want to see my girlfriend!

I think it's important that you should have an understanding with your boss, possibly ask if they think it necessary for you to stay late.

Everyone's heard horror stories about bad bosses making their staff stay late all the time, and employees who work to hard.

Because you've only just started making a good impression is important but make sure your extra efforts are appreciated and you're;

a. not working too hard

b. not begin taken advantage of

Hope this helps

Jim

9pm every night!!  It may also give a bad impression staying. He may have problems managing his work-load (and impressing his boss), but at the end of the day he is being paid more to stay there, at soon as you set a standard, people's expectations of you are greater.  I always leave on time (never done me any harm!) I do come in early, work through lunch and stay late if there is a panic or work crisis!  Its important to have a life outside work (work hard, play hard!)  It means less stress too - join a club or a gym class maybe and let your boss know what day it is - then everyone will know you are leaving on time that night (at least).

The key to marketing is to be creative; if you don't have any down time, you will not have the opportunity to observe the world, and to recharge your batteries, in other words you'll get stale.

I think it is fair to say you will never complete all the work on your plate, there is always more to do, but if you can complete those projects and tasks that will make a difference, then i.e. everything in your important and urgent box, and important and not urgent box, then your boss should be pleased that you can get it done, and have a life.

I also strongly believe if you work every hour in the day, what can you do when the poo hits the fan?  There is no give.  I always believe in working at 90% capacity, it gives me free time to do that extra investigation, or to react to a unexpected business need.

I would recommend that you deliver a few projects, and then discuss with your boss your intentions.

I don't think bosses expect people to stay back just for the hell of it. I don't anyway. If you are getting your projects done on time, then there is no reason to hold back.

But as a boss you do notice if someone is leaving at 5:30 everynight and just doing enough to get themselves through the day.

The truth is this is no industry for anyone who watches the clock. You have to love what you do and time does not really come into it. Back when I was a junior - I worked back after hours at night so I could get my jobs looking fantastic.

If you want a 9 - 5 job - look to the Civil Service.
