New research from Hotxt reveals that a third – 2.2 million – people across the UK between the ages of 16-24 regularly text people within their social networks and communities.
A further 1.8 million said they would be happy to keep in regular contact with people from these social networks via their mobile phones. Currently, 1.5 million claim to text their personal communities at MySpace.com alone.
This new research underlines the increasing trend to communicate with their social networks no matter where they are, without the constraints of a PC.
The research also reveals that 2.3 million people from this age group tend to visit online social network communities every day, with a further 1.9 million visiting at least two to three times each week.
Co-founder and Chairman of Hotxt, Doug Richard, said, “With the rise of social networks as such a powerful and popular medium, it’s a natural progression that people will want to continue that communication whenever and wherever they are.
“Our experience shows that the younger generation in particular, use texting as their main means of communication and there is no sign of any slow down.
He added, “What this research shows is that as we become more mobile, people want the flexibility and security of contacting their networks not just over the internet but also over their phones.”
Social networks and texting have becoming an integral part of young people’s every day lives with their popularity exploding across the world bringing people together to share information, views and trends.
To date research shows that the main networks in the UK have about 23 million members and at least 158 million people worldwide subscribe to networks MySpace, Friendster and Bebo alone with these figures set to increase in the future.
Richard concluded, “Overall people are moving towards a more accessible way of social intervention, but it is important to ensure that people are protected.”
