The office Christmas party is looming. If you’re in the privileged position of having the budget to hand the ebent over to a party planner, well done.
If not, it might fall on your shoulders as a marketer to organise the corporate event and with Health and Safety never being so important you might find yourself trouble.
Managing Director of Wilde Thyme, Jamie Landale, points out some H&S issues that event organisers should bear in mind when staging a Christmas party.
1. Use of candles
Some venues do not allow candles, some only allow if flame is enclosed
If using any additional theme lighting or Christmas trees, etc, all wires must be taped down to ensure they are not a trip hazard.
4. Carrying tables and chairs
Ensure enough time as it takes more time than you think. Carry chairs in small piles not huge piles to prevent accidents. People should be wearing appropriate clothing, especially footwear in case they drop a table on their foot.
Must know contents of food, especially relevant if food has been delivered in and the caterer is not there to answer questions. This is with regard to allergies especially nuts and shell fish.
If food has been delivered in or bought in from supermarket ensure that it has been stored at correct temperature prior to serving and cooked according to instructions.
6. Waiting staff
If using, they should be properly briefed on what food is, potential hazards in venue (i.e. steps), what to do in event of emergency (guest illness).
7. Glass Breakage
There will nearly always be some kind of glass breakage, so have a broken glass disposal policy not just chucked in to the bin liner.
8. External contractors
If hiring external contractors who are using electrical equipment, all equipment should be PAT tested in accordance with the law. If this has not happened and there is an electrical failure, liability may lie with the organiser.
Any working in kitchen should be suitably attired and should be aware of basic health and safety in kitchen
