Andy Beer, Tactical Marketing Director, Pitney Bowes assesses how the latest mail technology is facilitating the cost-saving process.
The advantages of using digital franking meters have never been more apparent, with the increased productivity and cost savings that they bring.
Last year Royal Mail announced a minimum of a 2p discount for every 1st and 2nd class franked envelope – a saving that quickly takes on significance for businesses despatching a steady stream of communications to customers and prospects.
Royal Mail’s latest postal discounts offer significant bottom-line benefits to those businesses taking the time and effort to produce accurate, machine-readable mail.
Three new discount opportunities have come into play for users of digital meters – Discounted International Services, Cleanmail Advance and Automated Standard Tariff Large Letters.
Royal Mail are extending the discounts already enjoyed by users of franking machines to International Services.
This means that if companies send international mail through a meter you’ll benefit from a saving between 1p and 8p depending on the service and weight-band.
Automated Standard Tariff Large Letter will offer business customers discounts of between six and nine per cent when sending a minimum of 250 machine-sortable large letter items (C5 – C4).
Cleanmail Advance will offer discounts of up to 12 per cent for customers sending more than 1,000 items per batch with correct and machine-readable addresses.
In simple terms, these discounts are offered to businesses producing mail that can be sorted by Royal Mail’s machines, rather than by hand, since these items cost less to process.
Both the Cleanmail Advance and the Automated Standard Tariff Large Letter discounts call for stringent address accuracy, again reflecting the fact that accurate post is less problematic – and therefore less expensive - to deliver.
Here, the latest technology is enabling businesses to validate addresses against Royal Mail’s Postal Address File, whilst dedicated printers enable users to print these addresses crisply onto envelopes, postcards, labels, etc.
The convenience of digital mail technology has long been recognised, along with its ability to produce crisp, professional communications.
Now, business users are recognising the serious bottom-line benefits to be gained from producing accurate, machine-readable mail.
