Regardless of which side of the fence you straddle, there is no denying the fundamental impact Twitter has had on many seemingly unrelated areas of our life. It is not just an alternative marketing platform, a status update, or a celebratory stalking device. The term “micro-blogging site,” which is - while we’re here - an understatement of gargantuan proportions, is no longer applicable.
For one, it has revolutionized journalism in its most basic form. A “constant information stream” rests as a common label thanks to the recent press on the civil unrest in London. Not long ago it made headlines for, in hindsight and unknowingly, being the first public documentation of Osama Bin Laden’s assassination.
There’s no denying that in the wrong hands Twitter can be used to more damaging effects. This year the Twitter account for Fox News was hacked into and the culprits publically tweeted its nearly 45,000 followers that President Obama had been shot. More recently Conservative MP Louise Mensch has received threats from hactivist groups via the site.
Whether you’re fed up of Twitter grabbing the headlines or you’re a staunch user, it’s near impossible imagining a world before Twitter. In homage then, the final bout of infographics show the best in visual stats online.
