A major bluesource survey on social media usage and security, involving senior IT staff in over 500 medium to large UK companies, reveals that social media adoption is becoming increasingly popular for business but the resulting security and compliance risks present a major concern.
With 75% of people voting in favour of social media, this indicates that it’s becoming a highly popular business tool and is here to stay - with only 16% not currently considering it.
However, when asked about employee social media use, it still appears to be the preserve of the marketing department as stated by 73% of respondents but a gradual trend of increased use by IT professionals is signified by a 26% response rate.
Currently, the most used social media tool, with 78% of votes, is Twitter - just beating Facebook by 8% in the popularity stakes. These are followed by Linkedin in third place with 54% and Youtube trailing in fourth place with 36%.
58% of the companies surveyed are using Social Media channels in a concerted way, as part of their business strategies. Despite a massive 96% of respondents believing that social media’s use by employees can create potential security or compliance risks, 33% of these companies had no policies in place to manage or record what their employees might be saying over the internet.
The survey does indicate that more traditional digital media – such as email - are well catered for, with 83% surveyed now addressing legal discovery and compliance issues. However, in the rapidly evolving world of social networking, there seems to be less understanding of the implications and inherent risks of this new way of communicating.
Andrew Mckeeve, COO at bluesource said, “Our survey shows an unstoppable upward trend of social media usage by a cross-section of UK organisations. However, what is becoming increasingly apparent is that this adoption is creating new security and compliance headaches. Organisations’ IT departments will need help in planning against and managing social media threats – so businesses operations can safely enjoy the benefits.”
