Critically acclaimed O’Brien has a decade’s worth of directing and producing experience production company
Home Corp is welcoming Fergus O’Brien to its roster.
An experienced director and producer, O’Brien has received high praise for his documentaries, which include the award-winning BBC2 cult hit The Armstrongs, described by the Guardian as “a rare seam of quartz embedded in the grey granite of [the] year's schedules.”
He is soon to start work on a major new series for the BBC, presented by Stephen Fry. Joining Home Corp marks a move into the world of commercials for O’Brien, who specialises in creating warm, intimate and visually arresting films. Most recently, he worked as series producer for Channel 4’s landmark Seven Days, which allowed members of the public to vote on storylines and influence the lives of a community living and working in Notting Hill, London.
The programme was described by the Media and Entertainment Union as “interactive programming at its best”. Prior to that, O’Brien completed a film for ITV1 to mark the 60th anniversary of the founding of the NHS. Life and death on the NHS was described by The Times as a “startling, beautiful documentary”. O’Brien also directed and produced two films for BBC2 flagship strand Wonderland: Virtual Adultery & Cyberspace Love and The Madness of Dancing Daniel, of which his direction was described as “virtuoso”*.
The latter film was shortlisted for the Media Mental Health Awards. O’Brien’s 2007 film Waiting Room: Nail Bar made for BBC4, showing life in a south London nail bar was also well received, with The Guardian’s Sam Woollaston commenting “Fergus O’Brien could find gems anywhere and with this beautifully observed, lovely film about a unique slice of Britishness, he’s also made one”.
Emily Bliss, managing director of Home Corp, commented: “Fergus’s warmth and sensitivity are much valued qualities which will set him apart as a true commercial directorial talent. His films have been received with a huge amount of praise and critical acclaim – and rightly so. We look forward to welcoming him to Home Corp.”
Fergus O’Brien added: “Home Corp understands the industry inside out and is filled of talented, experienced people. They’re the perfect company to help with my transition into the world of commercials.”
