Majority feel that pre-university admin tasks should be completed online. Choosing course units online identified as the most useful activity.
More than 9 in 10 online users believe that it would be useful to be able to complete at least one activity concerned with starting university online, with choosing course units and applying for a student loan considered the most useful tasks, according to new findings released today.
The university online poll, carried out by user experience consultancy, Webcredible revealed that just under a quarter (24%) of poll respondents felt that the ability to choose course units would be the most helpful online activity when starting university, while 23% felt that it would be most useful to be able to apply for a student loan online.
The results reflect an increasing demand for richer interactions on the Internet and the need to have an option to complete a wide variety of tasks online, to ensure your audience, whether it's students, consumers or professionals, get the experience they want and expect. Social media of course also comes as a high priority, with 13% of respondents identifying a facility to meet fellow students online ahead of starting university as something that they would have found most useful.
The research polled more than 500 online users between May and August 2010 on what would be the most useful online activity when starting university. 12% of respondents felt that it would be most useful to be able to apply for accommodation, 8% chose applying for clearing places, with 3% identifying applying for a student bank account as the most useful activity to be able to complete online.
Some9% of respondents said that they would rather do everything offline when starting university.
Trenton Moss, Director at Webcredible comments, "With the increasing functionality and richer interactions offered by websites over recent years, users are coming to expect that they will be able to carry out certain tasks online. This research shows that many tasks that need to be completed when starting university are considered to be tasks that could be completed online.
"Although some organisations do offer online services for some of these activities, universities and other organisations involved with new students should be attempting the ensure that all of these online needs are catered for."
