M&S Christmas advert draws a galaxy of stars

Forget about recessionary cutbacks, the new M&S advert for Christmas features a joyous overload of celebrity.

The new Marks and Spencer campaign will break on November 11 but the retailer has released a few advance details to get ad fans excited.

Faces starring in the new 2009 campaign include Stephen Fry, James Nesbitt, Philip Glenister and John Sergeant together with two of the most celebrated partnerships on television - Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley, and Wallace and Gromit.

M&S model regulars Twiggy, Myleene and Noemie will join the star studded cast in the RKCR Y&R work.

With a theme of “Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without …”, the ad asks  each celebrity in turn what is the key ingredient for an ideal Christmas.

From Stephen Fry’s saucy “A little mince. Well it’s only once a year”, to Philip Glennister’s cheeky “That girl prancing around in her underwear”, (cue to shot of Noemie Lenoir) to Jennifer and Joanna’s,  “Stuffing …. your face sweetie.”, the ad takes a warm and humorous look at what makes Christmas perfect.

Featuring a host of products from mince pies to nightwear, baubles to party dresses and toys to tableware, it aims to show “that M&S has that perfect something for everyone at Christmas.”

“For so many of the British public – both those who shop regularly or occasionally with us - it’s impossible for them to imagine Christmas without M&S,” said executive director, marketing for Marks & Spencer, Steven Sharp.

“We are what makes Christmas Christmas for them and the festive season is when they just cannot imagine trusting anyone else for those all important Christmas touches.”

For the first time this year there will be several different ads running through the festive period.

The main ad campaign for clothing, home and beauty will comprise of two 50-second films, while the ad for party food will be a 30-second film featuring the same glittering cast, followed with a 40 second ad focusing on Christmas dinner.

These will be further complimented by a 20-second ad, focusing on the website, starring Wallace and Gromit and their Christmas wish list featuring of course, cheese, ordered on line and delivered to their door.

Twiggy will appear in a 20-second ad focusing on the M&S Christmas gift card.
