The average price for .co.uk domains has overtaken that of .com, selling for £790 while .com drops to £594, according to the latest market study from domain marketplace Sedo.
The study also shows that despite the challenging economic climate, the domain industry saw consistent growth in Q2’09 with 9,403 domains changing hands for a total of more than £9.5 million. During this time Talk.com received the highest bid, selling for £303,994.
.de remains the most popular country-code top level domain (ccTLD), followed by co.uk and .eu, hinting at the potential value and size of the emerging market for Internationalised Domain Names (IDNs).
The study also highlights that the ccTLD for China, .cn, has enjoyed the most rapid growth with sales increasing by 31 per cent on the last quarter.
The report offers insight into some of the key trends shaping the domain industry and despite average sales prices dropping, shows that .com still represents more than 76 per cent of all domain sales.
“Registrations for .co.uk domains remain healthy and the rise of the domain suggests greater demand for more localised domains which could be in response to ICANN’s decision to explore the possibility of opening up the domain space to introduce location and category specific names, said Director of Business Development for Sedo, Nora Nanayakkara.
“The jury is still out on whether or not these plans will go ahead and we’ll be watching the market closely to see how this develops.”
She added, “We expect to see more buyers enter the marketplace as businesses look to save costs on their search engine marketing and search engine optimisation spend.”
