Citizens believe planet is dying

Over half (56 per cent) of UK, citizens believe that the planet is dying, according to a disturbing report on Climate Change by Continental/KNOTs Research.

In other countries the percentage is much higher with 76 per cent of Japanese, 50 per cent of German and 44 per cent of American citizens believing the same.

A total of 1081 internet users were polled online in the UK, Japan, Germany and the US, and were asked: “Some people have said that global warming has progressed too far and that our planet is dying. Just based on your own feelings do you agree or disagree?

Of those who believed the planet is dying, nearly a quarter thought that the planet will die and no longer be able to support human life within the next 100 years - therefore this could possibly happen in their lifetime.

Overall people believed that the destruction of the world’s rain forests was the biggest contributor to climate change.

The destruction of our natural habitat by man is a strong emotional trigger to many and may explain why deforestation is seen as a major cause of climate change.

There are differences between countries on what people believe is the biggest cause of climate change. The US was less likely to mention removal of rain forests, which is in direct contrast to the other three countries.

In addition, a higher number of people in the US were unable to give a reason (13 per cent), possibly because the US was less concerned, or less informed about climate change than the other three countries.

Energy saving activities people feel they could do more.

The Germans were the most self-conscious where nearly nine in ten (86 per cent) felt guilty about not doing at least one of the energy saving actions shown in the table below.

The least self-conscious were the Americans where just less than three quarters (72 per cent) felt guilty about not doing at least one of these environmentally friendly activities. The one activity that people felt especially guilty about in most countries was not using public transport as much as they could.

The survey also covered a full breakdown of energy saving activity that respondents are currently undertaking on a regular basis, such as switching off unused lights (UK 88 per cent, Germany 84 per cent, Japan 78 per cent, USA 90 per cent) and recycling waste (UK 86 per cent, Germany 76 per cent, Japan 48 per cent, USA 69 per cent).

Director, Continental Research, Colin Shaddick, said, “We found the results from our research eye-opening. People are very worried and passionate about the environment.

Most people realised that they could not just sit back and expect governments to be responsible, and that every individual has to contribute to making a difference."

Shaddick believes the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) makes clear that the green house gas reduction targets being considered will do little to stop the rise in global temperatures.

He concluded, “The consequences of this could be disastrous. It also concludes that there is a nine out of ten chance that human beings are responsible for these temperature increases.

“What the world needs to know, and fast, is what actions need to be taken to control the situation and enable us all to start taking these now.”
