Bell designs for Gordon Brown

Leading integrated and brand communication agency, Bell has designed the Prime Minister’s Global Fellowship book, which was presented to Prime Minister Gordon Brown at 10 Downing Street on Monday 17th November. 

Bell was appointed to design the book after successfully creating and developing the ‘Unlocking Talent’ identity for the Talent and Enterprise Task Force (T&ET) and its Prime Minister’s Global Fellowship programme earlier this year.  The Prime Minister’s Global Fellowship was launched by the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) and the British Council, and offers young people the chance to participate in schemes to learn about how to contribute to the global economy.

Around 100 UK school leavers were sent by the Prime Minister’s Global Fellowship to China, Brazil and India to study each country's approach to unlocking talent, enterprise and entrepreneurship.  The Fellows’ feedback was gathered at a series of workshops on Saturday 15th November and was then collated and edited by Bell in collaboration with the T&ET.  The book was then designed by Bell and printed within 48 hours.  Bell’s aim was to capture the Fellows’ experience so the book is made up of a series of quotations allowing the Fellows to tell their story in their own way.

Bell creative director, Ian Allison comments: "For Bell, this is the high point of a year long branding campaign.  The book itself is a stunning example of what this country can offer the world in terms of creativity and quality.

“This project was unique in many ways; we knew what the nature and format of the content would be, but not the message. Therefore, we were in a position to design certain structural elements in advance – but the bulk of the content was not available until the morning of the design day.  When the content was briefed into our studio, it became clear that the Fellows had a single, compelling message: the UK has a future in the global economy, but only if we all ‘wake-up’ and understand the emerging world order.  Their generation was prepared to meet this challenge head-on, with enthusiasm and energy.”

The product is a cut-down, landscape A3 portfolio giving it size, weight, presence and gravitas.  A portfolio is used to display work one is proud of.  It is a collection of inter-dependent or related activities with high value, importance or complexity.  The landscape format is expansive and panoramic.  The work is held in place with Nickel Screws; the contents are robust and durable, as is our message.  This format would be impressive and quick to assemble – a perfect marriage of aesthetics and ergonomics.  A vibrant enclosure opens to reveal a folding ‘call-out’ carrying a ‘wall’ of images created by the Fellows.  This creates immediate impact, encourages the reader to ‘play’ and communicates the dizzying variety of experiences that the Fellows had.

Vibrant colours, inspired by the cultures of the countries visited, grab the reader’s attention, communicate diversity and energy – and yet strangely harmonise to create a single, overall voice. The enclosure carried a luminescent spot colour, the interior was CMYK.  Cutting-edge colour management software was employed by printers DG3 to ensure vibrancy and consistency. Sections were colour-coded to help users navigate through the content.
